Job offer comparison calculator

Two offers, side by side: base, bonus, signing bonus, equity and 401(k) match, added up for the first year and for an average year over the vesting. Optionally, see where each base sits against what open postings pay for the work.

The comparison

Comparing offers fairly

Two offers with the same base can be far apart. A bonus, a grant that vests over four years and a 401(k) match all add up, and a signing bonus makes the first year look better than the ones after it. The calculator puts each piece on a yearly footing so the totals compare.

How it adds up

  • Equity: the grant's value today divided by its vesting years. What it is worth when it vests can be more, or nothing; a private company's shares are the least certain.
  • Bonus and match: a share of base, at target. A bonus paid on performance may come in under or over it.
  • Signing bonus: all in the first year, and spread over the vesting for the average year.

It leaves out tax, benefits like health insurance, and cost of living, which differ too much from person to person to guess. For what the work pays where you are, use the salary lookup.

Questions

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Your inputs are kept in the page's address, after the #, so you can bookmark or share the comparison; that part of an address is never sent to a server.

How is equity counted?

As the grant's value today, divided evenly over its vesting years. A one-year cliff, refreshers and what the shares are worth later are not modeled.

What does the market check compare?

Each offer's base against the tops of the pay ranges open job postings state for that kind of work and place: below the middle half, inside it, or above it.
