Track job referrals without a spreadsheet

Keep the people you know at each company, what you sent them and who owes you an answer in the same place as the jobs you are applying to. It drafts the ask. You send it.

People and referrals

A referral beats a cold apply

It shows who you know at each company, drafts the ask, and tracks who said yes.

  • Who to contact. Every company with a job in play. Pro
  • A draft from your record, 300 characters for a connection note.
  • It drafts. You send. It never sends a thing.

A contact card and a message draft that types itself under a 300 character counter. After the person sends it, the referral moves from To ask to Asked, then to Agreed.

From a name to a referral

Four steps, and you do the part that has to be you. It keeps the list and the dates.

  1. Add the people you know

Each person is tied to their employer, so they show up beside that company's jobs, with how you know them and what has passed between you.

  2. See where you have a way in

Who to contact lists the companies you have a job in play at, with the best person to try first: the closest tie, then anyone already talking with you, then people who can refer or decide. Pro Where you know no one, “Find people” suggests who to look for: alumni of your schools, people from your past employers, and the managers and recruiters there.

  3. Get a draft

Pick a person, and a job if there is one, and choose what the message is for: a first hello, a referral ask, a follow-up or a thank-you. It writes from your profile, your background notes and whatever has already passed between you, and it is told to stay inside that record. Pro

  4. Send it, then log it

Edit the draft and send it yourself. Then record that you did. From there the app keeps track of who is waiting on whom, and moves the referral from to ask, to asked, to agreed, to submitted.

Follow-ups

The next date sets itself

Log what happened and the contact's follow-up moves to match. You can still set any date by hand.

A message you sent comes due in a week. A reply is due today, because the next move is yours. After a call, a thank-you is due the next day. People who are due show up in one list on the Today tab, next to how many messages you sent this week and how many got a reply.

A contact card for Megan Doyle. As a message, then her reply, then a call are logged, her stage moves from contacted to replied to talked and the follow-up date changes from a week out, to today, to the next day.

You stay the one who sends

It drafts, and nothing more. It never sends a message, an email or a request for you, and it never writes to anyone on your behalf. You send from wherever you talk to the person, then mark it sent, and the app takes it from there.

On the free plan: contacts, logging what you sent, and tracking referrals.

On Pro, $19 a month: who to contact and the drafts.

Questions about referrals

How do I track job referrals?

Add the person you plan to ask, tie the ask to the job it is for, and move it from to ask, to asked, to agreed, to submitted as it happens. Each message you log sets the next follow-up date, so you can see who is waiting on you and who owes you an answer. Referrals sit beside the job in your tracker, and a referral marked submitted is added to that job's timeline.

Does it send messages for me?

No. It drafts, and you send it yourself. Nothing goes out without you.

What does it use to write a message?

Your profile, your background notes, the person you are writing to, the job if you pick one, and the last few things you sent or heard. It is told not to invent experience, mutual friends or details about the other person. Read it before you send it; it is a draft.

What if they never answer?

A message you sent comes due for a follow-up a week later. You can ask for a follow-up draft that refers back to the first message and makes the ask smaller, or set a different date, or mark the person as dormant.
