What an ATS does with your resume

Before a recruiter sees your resume, the applicant tracking system parses it into fields: your name and contact details, each job's title, employer and dates, your schools and your skills. Recruiters then search those fields. A resume the parser misreads can be filed with no email, no employers or no years of experience, and never come up in a search it should match.

What this checker looks for

  • Contact details a parser can find: your name on the first line, an email, a phone number, a city and state, and links written out in full.
  • Sections by their headings: Experience, Education and Skills under names parsers know.
  • Each role's title, employer and dates as separate fields. Bold type is invisible to a parser, so an employer only bold sets apart runs into the title.
  • Layout parsers skip in a Word file: text boxes, page headers and footers, tables, columns, pictures and links shown only as a word.

Each problem costs points by how much it hurts, from 100. It is rules, not AI, so the same resume gets the same score every time. Every ATS parses a little differently; this follows the common ones and grades the worst case.

Once it reads cleanly

DonutApply's Chrome extension fills job applications from that resume and your profile on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday and most other systems, and attaches the file. You check what it filled and press Submit yourself.

Questions about the checker

Is my resume uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read inside your browser by code this page loads, and nothing about it is sent to DonutApply or anyone else. There is no account and nothing to sign up for.

Will a high score get my resume through every ATS?

No checker can promise that. Every applicant tracking system parses a little differently, and this one follows what the common ones do and grades the worst case, so a resume that reads cleanly here reads cleanly in most of them. It checks whether a parser can read your resume, not whether a recruiter will like it or whether it matches a particular job.

Does it use AI?

No. It is rules, like the parsers it imitates, so the same resume gets the same read and the same score every time.

Why does a PDF get fewer checks than a Word file?

A PDF is read by its text alone, so the layout checks (text boxes, page headers and footers, tables, columns, pictures and hidden links) only run on a Word file. A PDF made as a picture has no text to read and scores as blank, which is also what most parsers see.

What does it check?

Your name, email, phone, city and links; the section headings; each role's title, employer and dates; your schools and degrees; and your skills. Then what a parser would miss or garble: contact details in the page header, text boxes, tables, columns, pictures, links shown only as a word, an employer only bold type separates from the title, roles with no dates, and missing Experience, Education or Skills sections.
